Curiosity Class List for Summer 2009

We are offering a very exciting list of classes this summer! This year, there is something for everyone! So take a peek and be sure to stop by the Morgantown Public Library to sign up for as many as you like.

Curiosity Quest Summer 2009

LEGO Robotics (Grades 5+) Tu/Th. June 16 & 18
Begin the challenge of learning visual programming of the LEGO Mindstorms. Learn how to use a computer to “talk” to your specially designed robot to make it perform specific tasks. Learn skills needed to be on a FIRST LEGO League team. This class continues on June 18. Judy Werner.

Red Hot Chili Peppers (Grades 1 – 6) Th. June 25
Travel “south of the border” & enjoy an introduction to Spanish language, culture and art. Make a Mexican boy magnet, a Mexican welcome chili pepper ristra, a mini piñata and more. Joan Bissett.

LEGO Builders (Grades 1 – 3) Fri. June 26
Be creative and share your building skills to see what can be made. Learn to draw plans of what you made. Follow the plans of others. Make a variety of structures and vehicles. Judy Werner.

This Math IS Fun (Grades 2 – 4) Mon. June 29
Math can be fun when it is learned with puzzles and games. Create your own to continue your learning at home. You will never even know that you are learning a lot of math! Judy Werner.

Adventures with Madeline (Grades 1 – 5) Th. July 9
Join Madeline & Pepito’s adventures around Paris through books and videos. Learn some French, make some “oh la la” crafts, and play some Madeline games. Test your culinary skills as you decorate a Madeline hat cookie at the “Lord Cucuface Cooking School.” Joan Bissett.

Brain Games (Grades 3 – 6) Fri. July 10
Stretch your mind as you learn several strategy games such as Nine Mens Morris and Mancala. Make your own boards to keep playing these games at home all summer. Judy Werner.

Edible Math (Grades 1 – 3) Th. July 16
Enjoy sharpening your math skills the fun way, by eating as you solve problems. Find out how gummy worms and other fun snacks can teach you some math skills and problem solving ways. Judy Werner.

The Art Factory (Grades 1 – 6) Th. July 23
Did you know that Monet painted more than 250 images of water-lilies? That Picasso spent three years painting only in the color blue? Become an Art Expert as we investigate the world of art history from Monet to Warhol, Picasso to Pollock. We will create our own masterpieces while exploring the different techniques perfected by the Masters. Library Staff.

LEGO Racers (Grades 2 – 6) Fri. July 24
Learn science while being creative designing and building vehicles. Learn about gears and motors. Enjoy the designing, creating, and building several race cars with LEGOs. Judy Werner.

Very Fairy Fun & Games (Grades 1 – 5) Th. July 30
Explore a magical world where fairies & leprechauns live & play. See how to build a fairy house. Let your imagination soar as you create your own colorful fairy, make fairy crafts & food. Concoct your own unique recipe of edible magic fairy dust and play fairy games. Joan Bissett.

From Aphrodite to Zeus: Exploring Greek Mythology (Grades 1 – 6) Th. Aug. 6
Learn about the fascinating world of Greek Mythology. We will discover the different characteristics of the many gods and mythological creatures while making crafts, playing games, and starring in our very own mythic tale. This class is a must for fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians! Library Staff.

Light: Bending, Twisting, and Turning! (Grades 1 – 6) Th. Aug. 13
Exploring the world of light and optical illusions with hands on experiments. Learn different ways that light can change and even trick you into seeing things in a ‘different light.’ Library Staff.

LEGO Machine Shop (Grades 3 – 6) Mon. Aug. 17
Learn the science of simple machines while carrying out simple experiments and building with LEGOs. Learn how gears, and levers can make work easier by building things with LEGOs, but it’s also all in FUN! Judy Werner.

Magnets: Being Pulled a New Direction (Grades 1 – 6) Th. Aug. 20
Explore how magnets are used in everyday life and how their presence can detect things around you. What are magnets and how can you use them to help you? It’s amazing how attractive magnet are – you definitely won’t be repelled! Library Staff.
