Summer 2010 Course List

Let's Celebrate Star Festival (Grades 1 – 5) Thurs. June 10
Star Festival is July 7th in Japan. We will decorate a bamboo tree with Origami ornaments, paper cuttings and Japanese writings. You will make an origami star, birds, a butterfly, flowers, and more. You will learn some Japanese & Chinese writings too. How would you like to sing the Star Festival song and hold a decorated bamboo tree in your hand?

Grossology (Grades 3 – 6) Thurs. June 24
What is “Grossology,” you ask? Learn the science behind boogers, snot, sweat, sneezes, gas and other indelicate topics that fascinate kids. Need we say more?! Sign up if you dare!

The Art Factory (Grades 1 – 6) Thurs. July 1
Did you know that Monet painted more than 250 images of water-lilies? That Picasso spent three years painting only in the color blue? Become an Art Expert as we investigate the world of art history from Monet to Warhol, Picasso to Pollock. We will create our own masterpieces while exploring the different techniques perfected by the Masters.


Fun With Science: Hands on Weather (Grades 1 – 6) Thurs. July 8
Rainstorms, clouds, tornadoes, and more! Find out what changes and shapes weather. We will create our own rainstorms, rainbows, hurricanes and clouds all inside the library!

Long Ago in Lands Far Away (Grades 2 – 6) Thurs. July 15
Book a trip to the land of make believe with trickster tales, folk tales, fairy tales and fables from all around the world: Africa, India, China & more. Meet Anansi the Spider, Baba Yaga from Russia & Irish leprechauns. Create multicultural crafts and puppets inspired by each multicultural story.

Very Fairy Fun & Games (Grades 1 – 5) Thurs. July 22
Explore a magical world where fairies live & play. Build a fairy house. Let your imagination soar as you create your own colorful fairy, make fairy crafts & food. Concoct your own unique recipe of magic fairy dust and play fairy games.

Magic Carpet Ride (Grades 1 – 6) Thurs. July 29
Travel to faraway lands on a magic carpet that you’ll design. Learn some Spanish, French & Japanese. Explore differences in alphabets, flags, costumes, money, holidays, animals & music. Make a Loch Ness monster, Russian nesting dolls and other global crafts.


The Secret of the Sphinx: Exploring Ancient Egypt (Grades 1 – 6) Thurs. Aug. 5

Learn about the fascinating world of Ancient Egyptian society and mythology. We will discover the different characteristics of the many mythological creatures, deities and royalty, while making crafts, uncovering archeological mysteries, and learning hieroglyphics.

Little House on the Prairie (Grades 2–6) Thurs. Aug. 12
2010 is the 75th anniversary of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series and we are celebrating with a trip back in time to simpler days. We’ll brew our own root beer, make toys to play with, and learn what it takes to survive on the prairie.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Grades 1 – 6) Thurs. Aug. 19
You don’t have to be wimpy to take this class! Get started with keeping your own journal or learn ways to write more in the one you already keep! We will get creative with writing and learn the basics of illustration and cartooning. But whatever you do, don’t get the cheese touch!
